Appreciation post: My uncle's old framing square trick saved a whole wall layout

My uncle, a retired framer, told me to always check a new square against a known straight edge before trusting it. I bought a cheap one for a shed project last month and figured it was fine. Sure enough, when I laid out the first wall, the corner was off by a full quarter inch over eight feet. I checked it against my level and the square was bent. Has anyone else had a brand new tool be that far out of true right out of the box?

@joseph_green13 right, cheap tools seem to fail more than they work nowadays.

Yeah, I've had that happen too. It's so annoying when the basic tools can't even get it right.

A full quarter inch over eight feet? That's wild for a brand new tool.
