Just realized betting on overnight tool shipping blew my deadline

I always thought ordering tools online with overnight shipping was the smart move to meet tight deadlines. Last month, I had a kitchen remodel with a firm two-week finish date. I ordered a special tile cutter promised for next-day delivery. It got held up in shipping for over a week because of a mix-up. I had to stop work, which pushed the whole project back. Now I see that relying on shipping for critical tools is a big risk. Many guys in my crew swear by online orders for speed, but I'm sticking with my local supplier for must-have items. Sure, it might cost a bit more, but having the tool in hand when you need it saves so much more time and stress in the long run.

Your two-week kitchen remodel with that tile cutter delay is exactly why I stopped trusting overnight shipping for jobs. I had a saw blade get lost in transit last year and it cost me two full days of work. Local shops might charge a bit extra, but they save your schedule when it counts. You can walk out with what you need and avoid the whole shipping gamble. It's just not worth the stress when deadlines are tight.

That point about local shops saving your schedule is spot on. But @the_rose, how do you handle it when a local shop doesn't have what you need in stock? Do you just order ahead more often?

Ordering ahead more often solves the stock problem. @the_rose has a point about skipping shipping headaches. It just makes the whole process smoother.

Man I was totally in the same boat. Used to think overnight shipping was the ultimate backup plan. Then a missing plumbing fitting put a bathroom job on ice for three days. That was the wake-up call. Now if the local guy doesn't have it, I factor in a huge buffer or find a different tool that gets the job done. The delay risk just isn't worth it anymore.
