Mocked my buddy for buying a $600 laser level, then I borrowed it for one job

I've been using a $40 string level and a bubble level for like 10 years on decks and framing. Figured lasers were just overpriced toys for people who can't read a vial. Then last month I had to square up a 40x60 foot patio slab by myself. Borrowed his Bosch GLL 3-80 and had all my lines shot in 15 minutes. No more walking back and forth pulling strings, no more guessing if it's drifting. Still feel like a jerk for all the trash talk I gave him about it. Anybody else eat their words on a tool they swore was pointless?

Dude. Wait. 40 by 60 feet and you were doing that solo with a string level? That blows my mind. I would have told you you were crazy before I saw that laser light up. The fact that you had all your lines in 15 minutes after a decade of fighting with strings is just wild. I bet you felt like you wasted a whole lot of time on your old method. No wonder your buddy bought that thing.

That was exactly my reaction when I finally tried one. I had been leveling a 30x40 shed pad with a water level for years and it was such a pain. The laser had my lines done in maybe 20 minutes tops and I just stood there staring at it. Felt like I had wasted so many weekends messing with strings and trying to get the water level not to freeze on me.
