Rental auger vs. buying one, the math finally clicked in Dayton

Last month I had to dig 14 post holes for a fence and kept renting a one-man auger from the big box store. After the third trip, the rental fees plus the wasted gas driving back and forth hit $210, and I still had a couple holes to go. I finally just bought a decent used two-man auger off Craigslist for $180 and finished the job in one afternoon. The torque difference was night and day, and now I have it for the next project. Has anyone else hit that tipping point where renting just stops making sense?

Whoa, hold up there. You saved money, sure, but that math is a little off. Renting that one-man auger three times probably cost you about $150, not $210, unless you had it for multiple days each trip. The real win was ditching the weak one-man unit for a proper two-man beast. That Craigslist find is the actual bargain here, not the rental comparison.
