Showerthought: My laser level logged its 10,000th hour of runtime this morning, which seems crazy for a tool I bought on a whim.

Some guys say that's a sign of a tool built to last, while others argue any modern tool should hit that mark, so what's your take on what actually makes a tool durable?

Is it just me or does hitting 10,000 hours on a whim tool make me feel like I accidentally did something right for once? Also gotta agree with @gray314 that simple stuff just works - my microwave from 1997 is still going strong while my fancy smart kettle gave up after a year.

Got a cheap orbital sander that's been running strong for years. Honestly, the simple ones with fewer parts just seem to last forever.

Totally agree, it's like the more basic a tool is the less there is to break. My old corded drill is the same way, just a trigger and a chuck, still works like new. Meanwhile my fancy cordless one needed a new battery after two years. Sometimes they just overcomplicate stuff with all the extra features and it backfires.

It's true for a lot of things, not just tools. My old toaster with just a dial outlasted three smart ones.
