Finally changed my mind about watermarking after a client in Nashville used my photo without paying

I was sitting in a coffee shop in Nashville last Tuesday when I spotted my photo on a local restaurant's new menu, and the owner just shrugged and said "that's just how business works around here," so now I watermark everything before delivery and ask for 50 percent upfront, has anyone else had a moment that flipped your whole approach to protecting your work?

Man I had a client try the same thing last year, that excuse is total garbage.

Honestly, is it really that big of a deal? Sounds like you got a free coffee and a story out of it. Maybe the guy was just being cheap not some master villain. Watermarking everything and asking for half upfront feels like overkill for one bad experience. Sometimes people just make excuses and you move on.
