My watermark habit was making it worse, caught it at a craft fair last month

I used to slap a tiny watermark in the corner of every proof image, thinking it protected me, but at a booth in Portland a buyer pointed out they could just crop it out in two seconds. That made me realize I'd been giving clients low-res files with visible marks and calling it safe, when really I was inviting them to steal because the quality was already poor. Does anyone else rely on a different trick like sending screen-only previews or splitting files, or am I the only one who missed this obvious hole?
