Shoutout to the coffee shop in Cincinnati that finally showed me why I should stop handing over raw files
So I was grabbing a cold brew at this little spot in Cincinnati last month and I noticed a framed poster on the wall, a cool hand drawn map of the neighborhood. Turns out the owner paid a local artist 400 bucks for it and the artist never handed over the original file, just a high res print, because the shop only ever needed to print it once. That hit me like a brick. I have been sending full layered source files to every client for like 3 years because I thought it was "professional" and now I see I was basically giving away my whole toolbox for free. Two clients since then asked for the working files and I said the fee only covers the finished logo, not the build. One got mad, one paid extra. Same lesson as that poster. If you hand over the raw file, you are handing over the ability to edit, resell, and reuse your own work without you. Curious what you all charge for a full source file buyout, a flat fee or a percentage?
