Split on watermarks: bother with them or skip 'em entirely?

I read a post in a freelancer group where someone said watermarks make you look insecure, and another said they're the only thing stopping clients from grabbing your finals and running. I've been burned once by a small biz in Austin who took my draft and never paid the $400 balance. Now I'm torn between putting a huge ugly watermark on everything or trusting a contract and chasing payments later. Which side do you all land on when you send previews to new folks?
