A client in Chicago made me rethink my whole approach to gray coverage

I was working on a woman who had about 60 percent gray hair and wanted full, even color. I used my usual method, applying the color from the roots down, but the ends came out patchy and dull. She looked in the mirror and said, 'It's still so uneven.' That moment at my station made me stop and really look at the problem. Now I start applying color to the mid-lengths and ends first, wait 15 minutes, then do the roots, and my results are so much better. Does anyone else use a different order for stubborn gray hair?

Used to think that order didn't matter, but seeing patchy results changed my mind completely.

Wow, that's brilliant - I'm trying that on my toughest gray clients tomorrow!

Has anyone tried adding a tiny bit of a lowlight shade into the formula for the mid-lengths and ends before processing the roots? I find that gray hair at the ends can get "hungry" and over-absorb color if the formulation isn't slightly adjusted. That 15 minute delay you use is solid, but I've had even better luck by mixing a demi-permanent for the ends instead of permanent color so theres less chance of grabbing too dark. The root re-growth always takes the color differently than the porous older hair, making two separate formulas almost necessary for those heavy gray clients.
