Client's scalp started burning mid-color, and one cold towel saved the whole appointment
I was 25 minutes into a root touch up on a regular at my chair in Sacramento when she said the back of her head felt like it was on fire. I grabbed two cold wet towels from the back sink, wiped the color off that section right away, and rinsed her at the bowl with cool water for 8 full minutes. Turns out she had started a new acne cream two weeks before and never thought to mention it. Now I always ask about new face products at the consult, has anyone else had a reaction pop up from a retinol or tretinoin?
In my experience the retinol or tretinoin on the face usually is not the culprit for a scalp reaction, just because the color paste barely touches the face unless you are doing a full head of foils or something drippy. What most of us miss is that those creams make the skin way more sensitive in general, and if she slept on a satin pillowcase or touched her face then scratched her scalp, that trace amount can absolutely set things off. Also worth knowing, some acne creams have benzoyl peroxide in them, and that stuff and hair color do not mix well at all, it can cause a real burn even in tiny amounts. So your gut to ask about new face products is right on, but I would ask about new meds and creams in general, not just the retinol ones. Your mileage may vary of course, everybody's skin is different.
