Foils vs. balayage on curly hair, the results surprised me
I've been doing curly clients for about 3 years in Austin and always defaulted to balayage to keep things low maintenance. But last week I had a gal with super tight 3C curls who wanted more dimension up top, so I tried foil highlights instead of the freehand method. The difference was huge, the foils gave me way more control to place lightness right at the roots without the color bleeding down her curl pattern. It took 40 extra minutes, but the end result looked so much more polished and she literally said 'this is the first time my color actually looks intentional.' I'm curious if other stylists stick with one method for curly texture or if you switch it up based on the look they want? What's your go to for keeping those curl lines crisp?

When you say the color was bleeding down her curl pattern with balayage, was that happening right away or more like weeks later when it started to fade? I ask because I've had clients where the freehand stuff looked great on day one but then the ends went brassy and the root shadow got muddy. With foils at the root, did you have to leave any out to avoid that harsh line where the highlight stops? Curious how tight you went with the weave too, like did you take bigger sections since 3C hides a lot?
