Got told my blowouts were too puffy and had to rethink everything

Last month a regular named Mrs. Chen finally told me she hated how I did her hair. She said my blowouts made her head look like a basketball. At first I was mad but then I looked at photos and she was right. I was overfilling the sections and using way too much tension at the root. So I changed how I section and now I use smaller clips and focus on smoothing the midshaft more. Its been three weeks and Mrs. Chen actually complimented my last two blowouts. Has anyone else had a client drop a truth bomb on them like that?

My girlfriend watches those stylist videos on YouTube and she showed me one where this guy was ranting about blowouts and how people forget the root needs to be worked first. Sounds like you figured that out the hard way but at least Mrs. Chen was straight with you. Most clients just keep coming back and complaining to their friends instead of telling you to your face. That takes some guts on her part honestly.

Man, I had almost the exact same thing happen with an older client who finally told me I was skipping her crown area. @val974 is totally right, that direct feedback was the best thing that ever happened to my blowouts.

Oh man, this hits close to home. Had a client last year who finally told me I was rushing the sectioning and missing the back part of her crown. Your mileage may vary, but that kind of honest feedback is like gold dust in this business. Mrs. Chen sounds like a legend for being upfront about it instead of just ghosting you or going somewhere else. My client said she'd been putting up with it for months before she spoke up, which made me feel terrible but also super grateful. Took that advice to heart and now I take my time working from the root up on every single section. Those little tips from clients who actually know what they want can totally change your whole technique for the better.
