Pro tip: I quit using a tail comb for sectioning fine hair, and a $3 pack of rat tail clips from Sally's saved my hands
Everyone in my cosmo class in Phoenix told me you have to part with a tail comb, it's just how it's done, and for 4 years I did it that way. My problem was fine, dense hair, the kind where every section slides back into the last one before you even get the foils placed. I was losing probably 10 minutes per highlight client just re-parting and my wrists ached by the end of a Saturday. Six months ago I grabbed a pack of those plastic rat tail sectioning clips off the clearance rack, the ones with the little comb tip, and started clipping each section as I go instead of trying to hold it with my fingers. Sounds dumb but it cut my foiling time from 90 minutes to about 65 on my regulars, and the sections actually stay where I put them. I told a girl at the booth next to me at a trade show in Mesa and she looked at me like I grew a second head, said real stylists don't need training wheels. Fine, call them training wheels, my shoulders feel better and my color comes out cleaner. Has anyone else ditched the tail comb for something like this, or am I the only one who fought it for years for no reason?
The wrist pain is so real, and anyone who calls a clip "training wheels" has never fought fine hair that slides back the second you look away. If it cuts 25 minutes off a foiling and you're not wrecked by Saturday night, that's just smart work, not cheating. Keep doing what saves your hands.
