Warning: That $200 hot tool set on Amazon is a fire waiting to happen

I bought one of those cheap hot tool sets for $200 last month and the curling iron started smoking during a client's appointment. Has anyone else had a tool just give out like that on them?

Did it actually catch fire or just smoke? My buddy's been using a similar cheap set for like 8 months straight with no issues. I feel like sometimes these things just have some leftover manufacturing oil burning off the first few times. Unless it literally went up in flames, you might just be overreacting a bit.

Overreacting" till your buddy's place goes up in smoke, right?

Right, overreacting until you're explaining to the fire department why your client's hair smells like burnt plastic... @fionat55 nailed it. I had a $150 flat iron pop and spark the other week, scared the life out of me. Tossed it in the garage and haven't touched it since. Lesson learned the hard way, just like buying a used blender that almost took my hand off.
