A freelancer at The Hive told me my networking pitch was too vague

I was at a meetup at The Hive in Austin last month and told someone I was a 'digital content creator'. They asked me point blank, 'Okay, but what do you actually make for people?' I realized I was being way too broad. Now I just say I write website copy for small tech companies, and I've gotten three solid leads from the same space in the last two weeks. Has anyone else had to get way more specific about what they do to make real connections?

That line about generic job titles being INVISIBLE is so true. I used to say I was in "home services" and people's eyes would just glaze over. Now I say I run a cleaning business for busy families and suddenly they GET it. Being specific turns you from a concept into a real person with a real skill.

Read a blog post that said generic job titles are basically invisible at networking events. Your switch to "website copy for small tech companies" is a perfect example of making yourself MEMORABLE.

Right? It's like telling people you're in "transportation" instead of saying you drive a bus. One makes them yawn, the other makes them ask which route.
