Appreciation post: A random chat at the library's free coworking hour saved my week

I was at the downtown library's freelancer meetup last Thursday, just staring at a blank screen for a project. This guy, Mark, sat down across from me and after a bit he just said, 'You look like you're trying to solve a math problem with letters.' I laughed and told him I was stuck on a client's branding brief. He didn't give me advice, he just told me about a similar project he messed up six months ago because he worked in a bubble. He said, 'I forgot other people have eyes.' We ended up talking for twenty minutes and he asked three simple questions that totally flipped my approach. I went home and rewrote the whole thing that night. It made me realize those free local meetups aren't about finding clients, they're about finding the one person who gets your specific kind of stuck. Has anyone else had a simple conversation at a meetup that actually unblocked a project?

Totally get it now, unlike @morgan_stone33's view.

Wait, have you guys seen that article going around about how people in creative fields actually benefit from explaining their process to total beginners? It kinda connects to what shane said about outsiders asking basic questions. There was this whole study showing that when experts teach someone who knows nothing, their own understanding expands in unexpected ways. It's like the simple questions force you to rebuild your knowledge from scratch, which is way more useful than just repeating what you already know. I think that's why some of the best advice I ever got was from someone who didn't even work in my field.

It's interesting how those moments work. The best help often comes from someone outside your field who asks basic questions you've stopped asking yourself. They aren't trying to fix it, they're just curious, and that curiosity can reset your whole view. That's why I keep going to those things even when I'm busy.
