Finally hit my first coworking milestone after 2 years of trying
Last week I finally hit 10 consistent days a month at a local coworking space downtown. It took me 2 years to actually commit after bouncing between coffee shops and my living room. I found this spot called The Hive near Main Street, and honestly the landlord cut us a deal on a corner desk with window light. Met a freelance graphic designer named Jess who introduced me to a small Slack group of other freelancers in the area. We ended up doing a lunch meetup last Thursday with 4 people and it was way less awkward than I thought. The biggest win for me was realizing I don't need to be there every single day, just enough to not feel isolated. Has anyone else had that weird transition from working alone to sharing space?

Coworking spaces are overpriced offices full of forced small talk.

Did you catch that article about how most coworking spaces make like 70% of their revenue from day passes and event rentals? Makes you wonder if the whole model is built on tourist traffic rather than actual members. Ray613, you're not wrong about the small talk, I swear some people treat it like a mandatory networking event every time you grab coffee.

Totally agree with you on the small talk thing, @davidshah. One time I was just trying to get some water and a guy cornered me by the fridge to talk about his startup for 20 minutes. I get that people want to network, but there's a time and place. As for the revenue bit, that's wild. My old coworking spot was basically empty on weekdays but packed on weekends with people renting desks for events. It felt more like a hotel lobby than a workspace, honestly. Makes you wonder if they even care about the monthly members once they've got your card on file.
