That coworking space near downtown told me to just "show up and introduce myself"
Went to WeWork in Austin like they said, walked up to a guy coding, he told me to get lost. Has anyone actually made a friend by just walking in cold?

This is the same problem with those "just network" advice people throw around. They forget that most strangers are in their own bubble, headphones on, working. Walking up cold to someone coding is like tapping a stranger on the shoulder in a library - it's just awkward for everyone. The bigger pattern is that people confuse being in a place with being part of a place. You need a shared reason to exist there together, like a class or a posted meetup time. Otherwise you're just a random person interrupting someone's day, (and nobody owes you friendliness just because you showed up). Maybe try finding a specific event or group that meets there first - that's how real connections actually happen.

Nah you're right, I used to think showing up was enough but this totally changed my mind.
