That one regular at the shared desk who made me rethink solo work

Had a chat Tuesday with a guy who's been renting the same corner desk at my coworking spot for two years. He told me he only comes in for the noise, not the quiet, because his apartment gets too still and his brain starts spinning. I always assumed everyone here was chasing networking, but he said he's never once asked anyone for a referral or a contact. That hit different because I've been grinding solo for 18 months and honestly, the silence was getting to me too. Anyone else pay for a space just to have background hum, or am I the only one who thought coworking was all about leads?

My buddy pays $40 a month for a storage unit just so he can sit in the lobby and read. Not the coworking place, a literal storage unit. He says the hum of the garage doors and people hauling boxes is the only sound that keeps his head quiet. I think we're all just paying for permission to not be productive somewhere that isn't our kitchen table. That corner desk guy probably figured out the secret two years ago, and the rest of us are still pretending it's about the WiFi.
