Tried two different ways to find local freelancers and one was a total bust

For the past three months, I tried just showing up at a big, open-plan coworking spot in Portland, hoping to bump into people. It was always too loud and everyone had headphones on. Then I started going to the specific "Freelancer Coffee" meetup they host every other Tuesday. I met two graphic designers and a copywriter in the first hour because it was actually set up for talking. Has anyone else found that structured meetups beat just hanging around a space?

Totally. My old networking group was a ghost town.

My last one had maybe three people show up. Felt like talking to an empty room after a while.

That "ghost town" feeling is why I skip the unstructured stuff now.
