Lesson learned from a dead radio on site
Was moving a heavy load when my radio battery died. Couldn't hear the ground crew's warnings. Always test your equipment first thing in the morning.

Back on a hiking trip, my friend's GPS died just as we hit a fork in the trail. We had to rely on a paper map we barely knew how to read. Ended up adding an extra hour to the hike because we took a wrong turn. Now I always pack spare batteries and a compass. It's crazy how one dead device can throw everything off!

Honestly, tech failures in the middle of nowhere are the WORST. I remember my headlamp dying on a night hike, and we had to use phone lights which drained our batteries too. Ended up stumbling back in the dark, totally spooked. Now I carry like three backup lights, it's ridiculous how one thing can snowball. Makes you really appreciate old school gear that doesn't need batteries.

But what if it was working fine at morning check? Like @rowan_wood's GPS, stuff just dies when you need it most.
