Pro tip: a rigger in Savannah told me my hand signals looked sloppy from 80 feet up
Last month I was running a 90 ton on a warehouse job and my rigger pulled me aside at lunch to say my signals were fine up close but mushy from his spot on the roof. He showed me how to hold each one two full seconds longer with my arm locked out, and it cut our miscommunication calls down to almost nothing on a 6 hour pour. How do you all keep your signals readable when the guy on the hook is more than 100 feet away?
So when you say hold it two full seconds with the arm locked out, is that the same hold time you use for every signal or does it change based on how far out the guy is? Curious because on a long boom you've got the whip in the line working against you too, and the signal can look like it's bouncing even when your arm is solid. What I keep running into is the guy on the hook not watching the hand at all, he's watching the load, so no amount of slow signals fixes that. Do you make your rigger lock eyes with you before you give the go, or is that something you just hope happens? Feels like half the miscommunication isn't even the signal itself, it's that nobody agreed on who's watching who.
