Serious question, did anyone else not know the load chart already accounts for boom flex?
I picked up a used Grove GMK3050 about 16 months back and have been running it mostly on residential HVAC units and trusses around Boise. Last Tuesday a guy named Duane who has been running cranes since the 80s asked me what chart I was using for a pick over a garage setback. I told him the main chart out of the book, and he asked if I was figuring for boom deflection at that radius. I said what deflection. He just looked at me.
Went home and pulled up the manufacturer's notes and it turns out the chart ratings already build in the flex at each radius and boom length, which means the number in the book is not the same as what your tip is actually doing. I had been adding my own cushion on top for no reason and also not understanding why my radius readout and the chart never lined up perfect on a long boom.
Sixteen months of doing it wrong, basically. Duane got a free lunch out of it at least.
How are you all handling boom tip vs radius when you're on a long stick? Do you trust the LMI or the chart or your own math?
