Serious question, why do we act like stress isn't a safety issue?

I keep hearing operators say to just tough it out and not let stress get to you. A few months back, I was so worn out that I almost missed a signal from my spotter. That scared me into making real changes, like taking short mental breaks during long shifts. Now I speak up when I'm not feeling right, and it keeps me and everyone safer. We need to stop treating mental health like it's separate from the job.

But isn't some stress just part of the job that we're trained to handle? If we start stopping work for mental breaks, doesn't that risk slowing everything down and creating more problems? I've seen guys who push through tiredness just fine because they rely on their skills, not their feelings. Making a big deal out of stress might actually make people less ready to deal with real pressure.

Mason273, ignoring stress causes dumb mistakes later.

Used to agree, but a close call rewired me.

Pushing through just sets you up for a bigger mistake.
