Snapped a winch line on what should've been an easy pick.
The load was well under capacity, so I'm baffled. Could it be a flaw in the cable itself?

Nah, probably just a sharp edge on the fairlead.

Could be! That sharp edge idea is spot on. It's wild how even a tiny burr on metal can wreck synthetic rope over time. I've seen it happen, where a clean-looking fairlead just shreds a line after a few hard pulls. Always worth filing it smooth or adding a roller guide if the problem keeps up.

Read an article a while back about synthetic rope and abrasion. The writer said it's not always a visible sharp edge, sometimes it's just a rough casting finish on new gear that acts like sandpaper. A few passes with fine grit sandpaper can make a huge difference before you even think about filing. That hidden roughness will eat through a line way faster than people expect.

Oh perfect, the classic "it's probably just a sharp edge" after two people just explained exactly that. Real detective work over here. It's like watching someone solve a murder after the killer already confessed on live TV.
