TIL a rigging hand in Wichita told me he counts shackle pins out loud before every pick
I was waiting on a concrete truck at a site off Kellogg last Thursday and got to talking with this older rigger while our crane sat idle. He said he does a verbal count of every shackle pin and safety clip before he gives the go, out loud to himself, no matter how small the pick is. At first I figured it was just a habit from working alone, but he said he caught a loose pin on a 4,000 pound panel two years back that a visual check totally missed. I tried it on my next three picks and honestly it slowed me down in a good way. Does anybody else do a verbal walkthrough like that or am I about to be the weird guy mumbling at shackles?
