Unpopular opinion: I thought those load moment indicators were just fancy junk until a windy day in Lubbock
Back in the early 2000s I ran an old 50 ton rig with no computer on it and I figured that was how a real operator worked, by feel. When the company started putting load moment indicators in the cabs I thought it was a crutch for guys who could not read a chart, and I flat out said so to my foreman. Then about six months ago we were setting steel panels on a job in Lubbock and the wind kept shifting on us, and that little screen lit up red on a pick I would have sworn was fine. Turns out I had the radius off by about four feet because the ground had settled under the outrigger pad. I am not too proud to say the thing caught what my gut missed that day. Still trust my charts first, but I quit bumping the thing off when it beeps at me. Any of you older guys come around on these, or do you still kill the alarm like I used to?
