Update: A rigger in Tacoma said he never trusts a new synthetic sling until he's 'broken it in' with a light load.
He told me he always does a test lift at 20 percent capacity to let the fibers settle, which I'd never considered before. That seems like a solid five-minute habit that could prevent a nasty surprise on a critical pick. Do you folks have a specific break-in routine for fresh rigging gear?

Wow, I used to think that was total overkill honestly. I always figured a new sling was good to go right out of the bag, but hearing this and reading the thread has completely flipped my thinking on it. @the_leo you're right, having a backup plan is key, especially when you're trying something new. That 20 percent test load makes a lot of sense to me now, just a simple way to check everything before you get into the real heavy work. Definitely gonna start doing this from now on.

That's a smart tip from the rigger. @henry_anderson54, what's the lightest load you'd use for that first test?
