A beta reader called my hook 'boring' and she had a point
Last month I posted the opening of my sci-fi short to a local writers meetup in Denver. One woman, a retired English teacher, said the first page read like a list of weather reports and ship specs. I was pissed for about an hour, then I reread it and she was right. I rewrote the opening to start mid-conversation between two crew members arguing over a broken coffee machine. Now my last three prompts on this sub have been built around that same 'start at the argument' rule. Does anyone else get defensive when feedback hits exactly where you know you're weak?
