Appreciation post: I stopped writing long prompts for my writing group and now I get way more responses
For about 8 months I ran a writing prompt night at my local library in Boise and I used to write these huge 3 paragraph prompts with detailed setting and character info. People would just stare at the page and maybe 2 or 3 would share anything. Two weeks ago I switched to short one line prompts, like "write a scene where someone lies about their job" and suddenly 11 people read their stuff out loud. The shorter version gave them room to just start writing instead of trying to match everything I described. Has anyone else tried simple one line prompts with their group, or do longer ones work better for you?

Something about a long prompt makes people feel like they have to write a book report instead of a story. Just wondering but has anyone tried taping the prompt to the wall and doing a timer? That fixed our group way faster than any change to the prompt wording.
