Beta reader said my fight scenes were 'too tidy,' so I broke a chair
I got feedback on a fantasy draft where every duel ended in exactly three moves, which sounds cool but reads like choreography instead of a brawl. My beta reader said, "People miss, they stumble, they grab whatever's close," so I rewrote a fight in a tavern and had a character throw a tankard, slip on spilled ale, and win by accident. That messiness made the scene feel alive, and now I start every action prompt by asking what could go wrong mid-fight. Anyone else get notes that made you ruin your own scenes on purpose? I'm trying to find the line between chaos and clarity.

Three moves sounds like a style choice, not a flaw, and sometimes tidy fights fit a character who plans everything. Chaos is fun, but don't let a beta reader talk you out of a clean win if that's the voice you're going for.
