Can we talk about how a 3 minute timer fixed my boring dialogue?
Last Tuesday I sat down to write a short story about two old friends at a diner in Reno, and every line I wrote sounded stiff. So I set a timer for 3 minutes and forced myself to just write what they'd actually say out loud, no fixing, no going back. I ended up with 412 words of messy talk, and when I read it out loud later, it was the first time my characters sounded like real people. Turns out my problem wasn't ideas, it was that I kept editing before I had anything to edit. Does anyone else use a timer to get past their own head, and what length works for you?
