Ditch the outline, steal their notebook instead

Everyone posts about bulletproof outlines for plot structure, but mine always falls apart by chapter 3. Last month I tried something weird at a writing group in Portland. I asked three strangers if I could copy their messy brainstorming notes, just the scribbles and margin doodles. Those chaotic pages gave me more story hooks than any template I paid $47 for. Has anyone else found gold in other people's failed drafts or rough ideas?
