Found a stat that 80% of fantasy novels use the same three plot structures
I was reading a blog from a writing conference last week and it said something like 80% of fantasy novels rely on the Hero's Journey, the Chosen One, or the Quest. Has anyone else tried breaking out of those patterns and had it actually work?

Wrote a fantasy short story once where the hero's big destiny was to manage a small tavern and keep the local monsters out of the ale supply. Got rejected by three magazines before a small press picked it up and it actually got some decent reviews. Still get the occasional email from someone saying it was refreshing to read something that didnt have a prophecy or a dark lord.

Beats my rejection from a publisher who said my story about a retired knight opening a bakery was "too whimsical.
