I used to think outlining a story was a waste of time until I tried the 'snowflake method' last month.

I was stuck on a fantasy novel for weeks, just writing random scenes that went nowhere. A guy in a writing Discord told me to start with a one-sentence summary, then expand it to a paragraph. I did that, then wrote a one-page summary for each main character. After about three days of this, I had a full chapter-by-chapter outline without even trying. Has anyone else used a specific outlining trick that actually got them to finish a draft?

The snowflake method saved me from a similar mess with a detective story. I started with the victim's last day and worked backwards in bullet points. It felt like connecting dots instead of staring at a blank page.

But doesn't that just turn writing into a boring chore?

My old roommate swore by the notecard method. I finally tried it with my space opera last year. Wrote every single scene idea on a notecard and taped them to my wall. Took a whole weekend. Seeing it all laid out physically like a weird puzzle made the whole plot click. I moved cards around until the order felt right and then just wrote to fill in the gaps.
