My kid asked why the hero always has to be a 'chosen one'

He said 'what if the prophecy was wrong and the real hero was just someone who showed up to work?', and now I can't look at my fantasy outline the same way. Anyone else had a simple question completely derail a project?

Hold on, that kid is onto something huge. Think about Frodo just wanting a quiet life in the Shire, or Harry Potter wishing he wasn't famous. The whole point is they're pulled into something bigger. The "chosen one" idea works because it shows that real courage is doing the right thing even when you're scared and you didn't ask for it. It's not about being special from the start, it's about becoming special because you stepped up when no one else would. That's way more powerful than someone who just clocks in.

Honestly, the chosen one is popular because it works. That kid just invented a boring office drama.

You're not wrong about the chosen one thing. My own life story would be a real snooze fest. The big twist would be me finally finding the right apartment building and getting the buzzer to work. That's the kind of high stakes drama I live for.
