My writing group leader said my prompts were too nice, and it threw me
Last Tuesday at the library in Boulder my writing group leader Ana read my prompt about a kid finding a lost dog and said "this has no teeth, where is the trouble?" I have been running nice, safe prompts for 8 months because I figured people write enough dark stuff on their own, but she thinks a prompt should corner you. Do prompts actually work better when they force a conflict, or am I overthinking what a prompt is even supposed to do?
Feeling that hard, getting told your stuff is too soft stings even when they mean well. Maybe try one prompt with real trouble and see how the group writes different, no need to toss your whole style.
