Question about choosing between a detailed outline or just winging it for a short story contest

Ever tried to wing it and ended up with a story that makes zero sense? (Asking for a friend, obviously.) I'm a detailed outline person, mostly because my brain is a mess without one.

What if the mess is where the good stuff hides though? My best ideas always come from getting lost in the writing, not from a plan. A tight outline can sometimes choke the life out of a short piece for me.
