Showerthought: I just wasted $45 on a 'premium' prompt book that was all fluff

The prompts were so vague, like 'write about a journey' or 'describe a feeling'... nothing you couldn't get for free online. Has anyone found a prompt source that actually gives you a solid starting point?

Wait, has anyone actually tried using one of those "story starter" decks instead of a book? My friend Tina got one of those card decks from a tiny press in Portland and she said it saved her butt when she was stuck on a short story. She pulled a card that said "a character finds a locked box in a place theyve been a hundred times" and she wrote this whole creepy piece about a janitor finding a box in a school boiler room. She said the box had a old key inside that opened nothing - but then she realized the key was a metaphor for her own fear of commitment. Wild stuff for a $15 deck.

My buddy bought a similar book and just uses the blank pages in the back for his own notes now.

Oh, that's a good idea for a different kind of book... but this one actually has numbered lines on every page for writing in. The blank part in the back is just for an index, so you can find your notes later. It's set up to keep things organized, not really for long journal entries.

Sounds like a system that would fall apart after the first week.
