Got burned by a joint card after a breakup in 2019, still untangling it
Back in 2019, my ex and I opened a store card for a couch we split, and I assumed she'd handle the payments since she picked it out. She didn't, and I only found out when a collections notice landed at my mom's house in Cleveland. Took me two years and a mountain of dispute letters to get it off my report, even though I had a text where she said she'd pay it. Now I refuse to co-sign anything, full stop. My credit went from 610 back up to 740, but the lesson cost me about $300 in late fees and a lot of sleepless nights. Has anyone else dealt with a joint account turning into a personal headache after a split?

Used to think joint accounts were no big deal if you trusted the person, but that's total garbage after reading this. My rule was always "we'll figure it out later" and later never comes. Now I see how one small card can haunt you for years, even with proof you didn't sign up for the mess. That text you had should've been enough, but the system doesn't care about fairness. I'm with you on the no co-signing thing, it's just not worth the risk no matter how solid the relationship seems. Sucks that we have to learn this the hard way, but at least you got your score back up.

The weird part nobody talks about is how these things can mess with your head even after they're resolved. Like you get the score fixed, the accounts closed, but then you start second guessing every financial move you make. You wonder if the next person you date will think you're hiding something when you say you won't do joint accounts anymore. It's not just about the money or the credit, it changes how you see people. That trust thing gets broken in a way that doesn't show up on any report. And honestly, that might be the bigger cost than any late payment ever was.
