My buddy's credit score jump after a 3-hour chat about his oldest card

I was talking to my friend Dave last weekend about his credit journey. He told me he had an old store card from 2012 he was about to close, but after we talked through how closing it would cut his average account age by 4 years, he kept it open instead and saw a 25 point bump in 2 months. Has anyone else had a similar experience with an old card they almost canceled?

Oh man, same thing happened to me with a gas card from 2013 I barely use. I was this close to closing it and my score took a small dip at first, then after keeping it open and paying like $5 a month on it I saw about 20 points climb in a few months. It feels weird keeping a card you don't really need but that age really does matter more than you think.

I kept an old card open for the same reason but honestly the bump was more like 10 points and not really worth the annual fee I was paying.
