My uncle the accountant said "keep one card at zero balance" and it boosted me 40 points

He told me to stop putting $20 coffee runs on my everyday card and let that one report a $0 balance each month. FICO jumped from 680 to 720 in about 3 cycles. Anyone else have a random relative give them something that actually worked?

Your uncle nailed it. The low utilization trick is pure gold.

A $6 balance did the same thing for me.

My own credit score story is basically me learning this lesson the hard way while crying into my coffee. I had a 620 for like two years because I kept maxing out my one card thinking "I'll pay it off eventually." Then my uncle sat me down and explained the whole 1% utilization trick like I was a toddler and honestly I needed it spelled out that slowly. Now I keep my Chase card at a $6 balance on statement day and my score jumped 48 points in one month. I actually felt embarrassed it took me that long to figure out something so basic. Have you had any major lightbulb moments with your own credit?

The low utilization trick is pure gold" - yeah that's exactly right. Your uncle gave you the real deal advice that most people find out way too late. The magic is keeping that one card at exactly $0 reported balance while letting the others show some small usage. I've seen people jump 50 or 60 points just by doing that one thing. It's wild how something so simple that takes two seconds to set up can make that big of a difference.
