PSA: my credit union told me 30 days late stays on your report for 7 years, not 2
I always figured a late payment faded off your credit after a couple years, like a parking ticket or something. Found out last Tuesday when I sat down with a loan officer at my credit union in Boise to talk about a car loan, and she pulled my report and pointed at a 30 day late from March 2019. I asked when it drops off and she said 7 years from the date it happened, so it sticks around until 2026. I was shocked because I had been budgeting around this idea that it was already gone. She also said the late payment hurts less over time but it still shows up the whole time, and some lenders look at that date no matter how good your score is now. I pulled all three of my reports for free that night and yep, still sitting there on two of them. Has anyone here had luck getting a 30 day late removed by just asking nicely?
Calling and asking nicely worked for me once. I had a 30 day late from a store card and the rep agreed to remove it after I explained it was a one time slip and I had been on time ever since. Worth a shot before you just wait it out until 2026.
