Shoutout to the credit union rep in Reno who told me secured cards beat my dad's trick
My dad always swore by the trick of paying every card down to zero right before the statement date so the bureaus would report nothing owed. I did that for almost two years and my score sat stuck around 640 the whole time. When I finally sat down with a rep at a credit union in Reno last March, she looked at my file and said the problem was that I had almost no history showing on-time use, because I kept erasing it every month. She had me switch to one secured card with a $300 limit, let a small balance report, and pay it in full after the due date showed up. Six months later my score went from 640 to 712 with basically the same spending. The part that bugs me is how many people online still push the zero balance thing like it's gospel. Has anyone else seen a jump just from letting a little balance show instead of paying before the statement cuts?
