Stopped at a credit union in Boise on a job and the teller showed me one thing on my report I missed for years
She printed my full report and pointed at a closed card from 2019 still showing a $0 balance but reporting as open, which she said can drag your score down since it counts toward your available credit. Pulled all three reports that night and found two more like it. Has anyone else had good luck calling the bank directly to get those closed accounts updated?
Boise is where I found out I had a Sears card from 2016 still showing open with a zero balance, and I only caught it because a mortgage guy pulled my stuff and laughed at me. I sat there thinking I was a credit genius for years while this zombie account just hung around. I called the bank that owned it and it took two tries and about 40 minutes on hold, but they sent an update to the bureaus and it came off in like 3 weeks. The trick is asking for the credit reporting department, not regular customer service, because the first person I got had no clue what I was talking about. So yeah, it works, you just have to be annoying and patient. My only regret is not checking all three reports sooner, since that one closed card was sitting on two of them and not the third.
