The $800 credit repair service that made things worse
I signed up with a local credit repair company in February after my score dropped to 580. They charged me $199 upfront and then $99 a month, promising to remove two old collections from my report. Three months in they had filed one dispute that got denied and stopped returning my calls. When I finally checked my credit myself, I realized they hadn't even pulled my reports right, they had the wrong address on file. I canceled and did the disputes myself in one weekend, got one collection removed in 30 days. Has anyone else had better luck with these services or is self-disputing really the only way to go?
That $99 a month was basically a donation to a company that did less than I could've done with a free trial of Credit Karma... I used to think paid services had some secret sauce but your story just confirmed it's all about checking your own reports and sending those letters yourself.
