TIL you can sometimes get a late fee removed just by asking nicely

I forgot a payment last month and got hit with a $35 fee. I called the card company, said it was a one-time mistake, and they wiped it clean. Has anyone else had luck with this, or did I just get a nice rep?

That's just rewarding bad behavior. People should be responsible for their own bills. If you forget, you pay the fee, that's the whole point. Companies have rules for a reason, and making exceptions for everyone who asks nicely just makes the system unfair. It also probably costs them money to handle all those calls asking for favors. Paying on time isn't that hard.

But what about the people who have automatic payments set up and the bank messes up on their end? I had that happen once, my payment was sent on time but their system glitched and they still tried to hit me with a fee. That's not a customer being irresponsible, that's the company's technical failure, and a one-time waiver just fixes their own mistake without me having to fight for hours on the phone. Not everyone who asks for a waiver is trying to game the system, sometimes it's literally the only way to get them to admit they dropped the ball.

My bank in Columbus has a one-time fee waiver policy they actually advertise in the fine print. It's not about rewarding bad behavior, it's about keeping a good customer. That thirty-five dollar fee is nothing compared to what they make from me over years of interest. I see it as a simple customer service move for an honest mistake, not a broken system.

My friend did that with her electric bill last week.
