Vent: fixing a wrong address on my credit report took 7 months and 3 mailings
I disputed an old address tied to a collections account back in March, sent everything certified, and it finally cleared last week after the third round of letters. Half the delay was me not knowing I had to send proof of my current address with the dispute form. Is it normal for this to drag on that long, or did I just do it the hard way?
Did they ever tell you why the proof of address matters so much? I went through something similar and figured out the bureaus basically match your ID and a utility bill against whatever address they have on file, and if the name or zip doesn't line up exactly they just kick it back as "unverified" instead of fixing it. That's why it feels like it drags forever (you're not actually disputing, you're feeding their matching system). Sending a copy of your license plus a bank statement with the same address saves you a whole round of letters. Seven months is long but not crazy if you count the mail back and forth.
