Warning: check your credit report after a utility account closes

I switched power companies six months ago and thought everything was fine. My credit score dropped 40 points overnight because the old provider reported a $0 balance as delinquent. Took three calls and two letters to straighten it out. Anybody else get blindsided by something like this?

Learned that lesson the hard way too lol, now I save every single utility screenshot like it's gold.

Whoa that's rough, 40 points is no joke! What worked for me was keeping the final bill confirmation email and screenshotting the zero balance before closing the account. Saved a ton of hassle when they tried to pull the same thing with me and I had proof ready to go.
